We got up at 4 a.m. and were ready by 5,30 for the arrival of the Carmel Limo and by 5.45 a.m. we were on the road to JFK. Our flight was at 8 a.m. to LAX. The early morning traffic was quite light and we made good progress an were soon at the airport, checked in and eating donuts and drinking coffee. Boarding was easy and the six hour Jet Blue flight uneventful with the exception of some bad behavior of some of our fellow passengers. There was some turbulence on arrival at LAX but this was not too bad and there had been quite a heavy rainstorm just before we landed. We got our baggage and then walked the 5 or 7 minute walk to the Tom Bradley International Terminal where we had to check in again and go through security. We stopped for a sandwich at a kiosk owned by Jose Andres and had a very tasty cold chicken sandwich. Then it was on to our gate and boarding the bus for the long drive to our Air Tahiti plane. We got up at the usual time of about 6.30 as the sun burst into the room and the roosters started their morning conversations. Shower and then to breakfast. Here I met William who is a guide at the hotel. He is busy during the day taking visitors on a tour but I have arranged to meet him when he returns after 4 p.m. to ask him about the islands, their culture, their people, the problems they have and whether life is better now than it was before or not and many other questions, especially about the cultural side of things, dance, song, music, beliefs, language, etc. I am looking forward to this. After breakfast we borrowed bikes from the hotel with the intention of going to the pharmacy to get some Tamanu oil, thinking that the quality there would be the best. Our bikes had no brakes, braking being effected by back-pedaling.
